Dropcam Pro: Connect With Home

There’s a saying that goes back to first-century Rome – “Home is where the heart is.” Take a moment and think back to the first time you took a big trip away from home. Where did you go? Who were you with? How long were you gone? What did you see?

Each one of you will have different answers, but many will share at least one similar memory: getting back, rushing to your room, and relishing the familiar sights and smells as your family settled back in at home — that place where, no matter where you are, you long to be.

When we first built Dropcam we thought it was going to be a security camera to help my dad solve the mystery of whose dog was leaving “presents” in his front yard. But it turns out that we unintentionally invented much more: a way for you to feel like you’re home from anywhere.

Dropcam Pro brings you even more of that feeling. With an incredible new lens and sensor, you can see the entire room or pinch to zoom in on the small details. Enhanced two-way talk allows you to connect with people and pets. Dual-band Wi-Fi brings rock-solid reliability. The new Bluetooth low energy radio sets the scene for linking battery-powered sensors to Dropcam. And mobile setup means it’s easier than ever to get started.

Stay tuned for updates as we continue our usual pace of software innovation on this incredible new hardware platform. While you’ll still long for home, we hope you’ll feel a little bit closer with Dropcam Pro.

  1. Does the new camera include software that allows the user control over the bandwidth used at any level of granularity? I’ve quit using my original drop can due to a lack of such control.

    1. Hi Roger!

We recommend at least 0.5 Mbps of upload bandwidth per camera (Dropcam Pro or Dropcam). The closest alternative we currently have is the ability to switch your camera into SD mode – you can do this via your settings and it will cut bandwidth use in half.

      Thanks for reaching out!

  2. Is there power back-up capability in case of a power outage?

Do you have other products with features such as temperature monitoring, motion detection, power monitoring, alerts, etc?

Can I allow others (family, etc) to monitor my device(s)?

    1. Hi Tony,

Power back-up capability is not currently a feature. However, if there’s a power outage, your internet would likely go out as well (which is necessary for your camera to stream video).

Our current products include Dropcam and Dropcam Pro.

If you would like to share your video feed with others, you can do so by inviting each individual via email or by making your camera public and sharing the link.

      Hope this helps!

  3. I already own too many “cloud” accounts and they just seem to keep growing. I really don’t want anymore. Is there anyway to link dropcam camera to a VCR or a PC for brief recordings or are we stuck with buying more cloud service?

    1. Hi Barney,

We built Dropcam to make it is as easy as possible for customers to access live and recorded video and specifically chose a cloud service to achieve this goal. We think a cloud-based service provides the best user experience in terms of ease of use and security. We know there are customers who want more of do-it-yourself solution but we are focused on continuing to improve our cloud-based monitoring and recording.

      Thanks for reaching out!

  4. I’m try to set my DropCams up so I can see my front and back doors/yards. I understand they aren’t made for outside use, so I set them in windows. Do you have any suggestions on how to reduce the glare/reflection due to the window – particularly at night?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Sean,

The best way to reduce reflection at night would be to turn your camera’s Night Vision off. This will of course mean that you will need to turn on your front/back lights to see at night. Hope this helps!

  5. Hi,
I set up my cam last night but did not receive an email, alarm until the next morning. Also I only seem to get those email alarms when power changes? The CVR track shows events and sound marks?
    Thanks,
    Harold

  6. I try to set an alert to notify me but when I leave dropcam and then come back the alert has switched back to off.
