Tue, 24 Jan 2012 09:21:00 -0800 Announcing Dropcam HD - Peace of mind in 720p for your home, your baby, and anything you love http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-hd-peace-of-mind-in-720p-for-your-hom http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-hd-peace-of-mind-in-720p-for-your-hom

After a year of research, development, and countless cups of coffee, we're excited to announce Dropcam HD, and it's available for preorder now! Over this past year, we've spoken with lots of our users to understand what they wanted from their cameras.  And with the goal of designing a useful and impressive camera, we give you Dropcam HD!

Dropcam HD is the first and only Wi-Fi video monitoring camera designed for your home. It sets up in under a minute, and you can now watch video in 720p HD from anywhere - Mac or PC, iPhone or Android. With 16 times better resolution than the previous Dropcam Echo model, Dropcam HD is the best way to monitor your baby, your home, your dog, and your business.

It's as easy as checking your email, but comes with the security of your online bank account.
-- Greg Duffy, Dropcam CEO

Sleek design.  And brains to match.

Dropcam HD looks amazing and its internals bring you peace of mind:

Watch on your iPhone, Android, or computer

Dropcam HD securely streams video to you 24/7 and will alert you when it detects any movement or sound on your email, iPhone, or Android. No matter where in the world you go, your video is always at your fingertips and secure for only you to see.

Audio and Motion Detection

Dropcam HD features a microphone and 720p HD lens which detect motion and sound.  Put one in the baby's nursery and you'll receive an alert to your email or on your phone if Dropcam HD detects motion or audio - day or night.

Night Vision

12 infrared LEDs automatically turn night vision on and off as the lights change. You can see in complete darkness while still retaining the amazing HD resolution.

Two-Way Audio

Yell at your dog or say hi to your baby from work. Dropcam HD features a speaker on the camera so you can talk directly to what you're watching. Simply open the free Dropcam iPhone or Android app, or login to Dropcam.com from any Mac or PC and click "Talk."

Digital Pan and Zoom

Sometimes you just want to focus on one area - your baby's crib, your driveway, or your dog door. With digital pan and zoom so you can capture every important detail from your video.

Dropcam DVR

Record your video securely offsite and get mobile alerts

Dvr-img

Thu, 17 Nov 2011 08:00:00 -0800 Dropcam makes an irresponsible driver pay for his mistake http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-makes-an-irresponsible-driver-pay-for http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-makes-an-irresponsible-driver-pay-for

Recently, we wrote an article on how Greg in Southern California caught a theft in his neighborhood on Dropcam. Using his Dropcam DVR, he saved the video to his computer and shared it with his local police. They in turn used it to search for the burglar. As it turns out, Greg caught another incident on his Dropcam involving someone running over his neighbor's mailbox with a car!

Greg reached out to us soon after and told us the story.

"My neighbor told me that someone had crashed his car into his ornate mailbox, leaving it in pieces and took off. He never saw the vehicle. I checked my Dropcam and provided him with a video of the hit and run."

dropcam-catches-hit-and-run.mp4 Watch on Posterous

Though you can't see the mailbox itself get run over, it's easy to see the car hop the curb and drive away. And what happened immediately thereafter is nothing short of poetic justice.

"My neighbor watched the video and was able to locate the suspect vehicle around the corner parked in a driveway. The vehicle had damage to the right fender, paint transfer from the mailbox and a flat tire. After that neighbor saw the footage of the hit and run, he paid my neighbor to replace the mailbox."

Dropcam Wi-Fi wireless Internet camera

The irresponsible driver admitted fault after seeing himself caught on Dropcam. Twice now, Dropcam has proven itself for Greg, his neighbors, and the Rancho Cucamonga community. Perhaps it’s time to bring some Dropcams to the next neighborhood watch meeting?  See more videos like this one on our YouTube Channel.

Would you use Dropcam for your neighborhood watch? Let us know in the comments.

Vinny has an adorable pet beagle named Mattie. For some time now, he’s suspected that Mattie has been toppling over his kitchen trashcan but has never actually seen it happen. It’s almost as if Mattie knows to behave better when she’s around her owner. Coincidence? We’d like to think so, but who knows really?

To resolve the matter once and for all, Vinny put a Dropcam in his kitchen. It didn’t take long at all to discover the truth behind this toppling-trashcan mystery.

All the light-hearted jokes of our pets secretly plotting against us might just be a reality!  Just look at what little Zoey did to her owner's tax forms as the April deadline was approaching http://youtu.be/XreFe5OOt0E.  At least Vinny has a little peace of mind knowing that he can keep on eye on Mattie with Dropcam.

For years, we have been dealing with her getting into the trash while we are out. Finally, we have the video evidence from our Dropcam.

Send us your pet video caught on Dropcam!

Thu, 03 Nov 2011 08:00:00 -0700 Dropcam video aids neighborhood watch and police in search of a thief http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-video-aids-neighborhood-watch-and-pol http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-video-aids-neighborhood-watch-and-pol

For Greg in Southern California, Dropcam was as an eyewitness to an unfortunate event in his neighborhood. Despite living in a great area, Greg saw his neighbor's gardener get robbed on his Dropcam. Greg can’t always be there to keep an eye on his front porch, let alone his neighbor’s. Dropcam watched and recorded the entire event.

Greg reached out to tell us the story of how Dropcam helped him. As he described in his email:

"On March 20th, 2011, my neighbor told me that his gardener had expensive equipment stolen off of his truck. I checked my Dropcam footage and saw that the theft was caught on tape."

dropcam-catches-thief.mp4 Watch on Posterous

Not only did Greg help his neighbor’s gardener, he helped out his entire community.

“I gave the video to the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department, which provided them with a "digital eyewitness" of the theft. Detectives told me that the area had experienced a rash of thefts of this kind. Detectives now had a description of the suspect and the suspect's vehicle, which was disseminated to patrol deputies.”

Greg’s use of Dropcam and the online DVR helped not only his neighbor, but the police too. With Dropcam, Greg went back in time to review the entire theft. In situations like these, one can never be too careful, and it’s great that Greg was able to help. With Dropcam on the scene, the Rancho Cucamonga neighborhood can breathe just a little easier.

Dropcam parents share lots of videos with us of their children, especially their babies. Two dads recently sent us videos starring their infants. So we just had to post them to share with everyone.

Baby's first steps caught on Dropcam

Pariya uses Dropcam to watch his baby at home. He's a working dad and can't be near his baby boy as often as he'd like. That's where Dropcam comes in for him.

baby-first-steps.mp4 Watch on Posterous

This was the first time my 6 month old son was able to stand up. I would have missed this magical moment without Dropcam, as I was able to see it from my office. Thanks, Dropcam.

We're glad that Pariya was able to watch his baby boy from work using his Dropcam. And now he has the memory to keep and share forever!

First time scaling a wall caught on Dropcam

Like Pariya, Shawn is also a dad who uses Dropcam to watch over his two infants. In his video, Shawn shows us how baby Avery takes her first steps out of her walker-- and then some. After watching, it becomes very clear why we know Avery at Dropcam as "Ninja-baby."

ninja-baby.mp4 Watch on Posterous

This is a priceless clip captured by one of my Dropcams. It's one of the best investments I've ever made!

Both of these dads shared a precious memory that they would have otherwise missed without Dropcam. We’ll post more awesome videos in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for plenty more or go watch some right now on our YouTube channel.

Did these videos touch your heart the way they did ours? Let us know in the comments!

William Atwood from Maryland!  William is a family man who was at home with his kids when the eastern US dealt with its big earthquake in August.  Sure enough, William’s Dropcam was in his kitchen to keep an eye on the scene.  William caught the start of the earthquake (and its funny effect on his cat and children) on his home Dropcam.

As William describes it, “even in Maryland , you can see the effects” of the earthquake using footage from Dropcam.

Kids,_cats,_and_buttscratching_dads.mp4 Watch on Posterous

Brittany, one of the Dropcamers who voted for this video to win, states that she loved how much build-up she found.  Dropcam was simply watching over their home, yet the video tells a story:

the man scratching his rear, then the cat running, then the actual earthquake with the boy falling dramatically.  The turtle audio is funny too”

Congratulations on your new iPad, William!

We want to thank all of our loyal and passionate Dropcam users for participating in this contest. Tue, 19 Jul 2011 15:09:00 -0700 How Dropcam Uses Your Available Bandwidth to Instantly Bring You Peace of Mind On the Go http://blog.dropcam.com/how-dropcam-instantly-brings-you-peace-of-min http://blog.dropcam.com/how-dropcam-instantly-brings-you-peace-of-min

Dropcam WiFi security cameras stream video securely to you using your available bandwidth--in other words, your Internet connection. You can view live video of your home, your pets, or your loved ones from anywhere at anytime for peace of mind.

What is Bandwidth

You've heard people say "my Internet is fast" before right? Your Internet speed refers to your available bandwidth. In other words, "my Internet is fast" actually means "I've got lots of free bandwidth!" The easiest way to understand bandwidth is through the following example.

Bandwidth_highway

Imagine a multi-lane highway with cars traveling over it. The cars are data and the highway lanes are bandwidth. If the lanes are empty, the cars (your video data) can travel up and down the highway quickly and easily. If the lanes are narrow and there's a lot of traffic, the cars take much longer to travel. Similarly, your video data travels across the Internet to you using your available bandwidth.

The more bandwidth you have --> the faster your data can travel --> the faster your Dropcam security camera shows you what's going on at home or work.

How Much Bandwidth Does Dropcam Use?

Dropcam uses around 150 kilobits per second (kbps) of your upload bandwidth to securely stream your video. This means that your Dropcam is monitoring what you want it to every second of every day. Unlike similar WiFi security cameras, Dropcam uses very little bandwidth and lets you:

  • Stream high quality H.264 video securely
  • Record video on your Dropcam DVR for peace of mind on the go
  • Review any detected motion or audio in your online DVR

Dropcam lets you instantly watch what you love for your peace of mind.

Learn more at https://www.dropcam.com!

Help

Curious about how much bandwidth you have? Run a Speed Test to find out! Remember, your Dropcam WiFi security camera uses about 150 kbps or .15 megabits per second (Mbps). As a rule of thumb, try to keep around half of your bandwidth free for your personal use!

Frank

Frank lives in the Big Apple and has two full-time jobs. He's an Executive Director at a large New York bank, and he's a dad. Living in New York, Frank leads a busy life.  He's got to keep an eye on his kids, watch over his home, and manage his bank.  Frank simply doesn't have the time to waste setting up his gadgets--he needs them to work--period.  He finally found his solution with Dropcam!  It's simple enough so that it can be set up quickly and work reliably for him.

Frank's three Dropcams help him watch his kids while he's at work.  His kids will wave to the camera and it's like he's right there next to them.  No hassle whatsoever!  Frank also admits that he uses his Dropcams to make sure that his kids aren't misbehaving while he's away.  As Frank puts it:

I use Dropcams for security when we are away from our home...and sometimes to verify when my daughter gets home from a late night out."

Sorry Frank, but we had to tell on you :-).

Using his Dropcam, Frank is never far away from the things he loves. He can be in the Bronx, Yonkers, Manhattan--his home, his family, and his life are just a click away.

Thu, 16 Jun 2011 09:00:00 -0700 Dropcam Brings You High Quality Video Using H.264 http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-brings-you-high-quality-video-using-h http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-brings-you-high-quality-video-using-h

You have a limited amount of bandwidth at home.  Your internet provider (AT&T, Comcast, DirecTV, etc.) gives you a certain amount of upload and download bandwidth so you can surf the web quickly.  How can you make sure adding a new device won't slow down the connection for your laptop, desktop, iPad, and other devices?

Dropcam video cameras use H.264, a state-of-the-art format for encoding high quality video. You may have heard of H.264 from big names such as Apple or YouTube.

H.264 uses information in the video to lower the amount of data it takes to represent it.  It is a powerful video-compression standard that delivers high quality video at low data rates. With H.264, you can be sure Dropcam won't take up all of your upload bandwidth and slow your internet connection.

Can't I use older technologies like motion JPEG?

Other Wi-Fi cameras use motion JPEG - lots of still images moving quickly to show movement. That's basically an electronic flip-book, or online zoetrope.

This method makes big files.  This means you need a lot more bandwidth to send video, and so you have less for your regular web surfing.

If you want high-quality reliable video to monitor what matters, without slowing your Internet, you need something more sophisticated.

Dropcam efficiently brings you live video for your peace of mind. The magic to this is how Dropcam uses H.264.

How does Dropcam save you bandwidth?

Dropcam uses H.264 to make low-bandwidth streams that still have high-quality video.  H.264 does many tricks using math and software to accomplish this goal.

We'll talk about one key part of the algorithm: motion vectors.  A Dropcam first sends you a frame of video. Then, it tells that frame how to transform to the next frame. This method takes much less data, so you receive less, yet far more intelligent, data over your Internet connection. You get high-quality video without using much of your available bandwidth.

Wed, 18 May 2011 12:01:58 -0700 Dropcam User Spotlight - Keeping an Eye in the Action with Jim Varner http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-user-spotlight-keeping-an-eye-in-the http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-user-spotlight-keeping-an-eye-in-the

Deputy Fire Chief Jim Varner is a full-time hero and part-time engineer.  His day job consists of saving mommies and babies and putting out dangerous fires.  In his spare time, Jim found a unique way to keep an eye on his firefighting team when the pressure is on--with Dropcam!

Dropcam_helmet_cam
Jim has made an effective Dropcam-Helmet-Cam, allowing other firefighters to monitor the action from their iPads or iPhones.  When a firefighter goes into a building, other members of their team can watch from a safe distance.  Dropcam video helps firefighting units adjust their strategy by seeing the situation in real-time.

Jim also hopes to give emergency responders a reliable, easy to use tool like Dropcam when out in the field.  Dropcam helps them to capture unanticipated events on record.  If there is an accident or a wreck, an emergency responder can have video documentation of what happened, eliminating the "he said, she said."

"This could be extremely useful for Public Safety. Dropcam was meant for homes and offices, but this is what it does too!"

-Jim Varner

We're excited to see what Jim comes up with next.  And we're proud to feature Jim Varner in Dropcam's User Spotlight.

Thu, 07 Apr 2011 10:00:00 -0700 Dropcam User Spotlight - Watching Classic Cars with Ralph Sikes http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-user-spotlight-ralph-sikes http://blog.dropcam.com/dropcam-user-spotlight-ralph-sikes

Everyone has a unique use for their Dropcam.  With the User Spotlight, we'll have a Dropcam owner share how they find peace of mind.  Our first spotlight is on Ralph Sikes.

Item_thumbnail

After an impressive 19-year career in IT, Ralph now fulfills his passion for classic cars as the founder of American Resto Mods, an automotive restoration hot-rod shop.

Ralph goes to great lengths to keep his team's work in plain view of the customer.  He recently added two Dropcams to his shop floor to monitor his business while he's away.  Ralph currently keeps his customers informed of a car's progress with photos.  But in the near future, the team at American Resto Mods hopes to further offer peace of mind to its customers -- by using Dropcam!

Dropcam is an ideal way to bring secure, quality video to anyone -- and Ralph knows it!  His plan is to place the Dropcam Embeddable Player on his website so all of his customers can keep an eye on their cars.  Patrons of American Resto Mods will be able to watch their car go from old to brand-spankin'-new, courtesy of Dropcam.  We're excited to hear what all the customers will have to say!

I choose Dropcam because of the ease and speed of deployment. They took about 15 minutes to configure and haven't missed a beat since I turned them on!

-Ralph Sikes

We're glad that Ralph's Dropcams are working out great for him.  And we're proud to feature Ralph and American Resto Mods in Dropcam's first User Spotlight.
